Manufacturing Jobs Drop

America’s 100 largest labor markets have lost nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs in the past 10 years, according to a Business First of Buffalo analysis of released federal data.

The top 100 markets had 6,686,400 manufacturing jobs as of June 2010, down from 10,184,600 in the same month of 2000. That means 3,498,200 manufacturing positions disappeared during the decade, a decline of 34.3 percent.

Business First analyzed data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It compared employment in local manufacturing sectors at the midpoints of 2000 and 2010.

Only one market added manufacturing jobs during the decade—Bakersfield, Calif., with a gain of 1,900 positions.

More details on manufacturing job losses are available from Business First of Buffalo.
