Ponzi Schemer Rothstein Gets 50 Years

Disbarred Miami attorney Scott Rothstein will celebrate his 48th birthday—and 50 more—behind bars.

Rothstein was sentenced Wednesday, the day before his birthday and eight months after his $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme came crashing down.

The sentence ends a career that saw Rothstein rise from a lower-middle-class childhood, with parents who struggled financially, to heading up his own 70-lawyer firm and living a life of luxury, complete with multimillion-dollar homes, expensive cars and boats—most of which were auctioned off to help recover money for his victims.

Last week, in a 12-page letter asking for leniency, Rothstein said he did not have the words to explain the magnitude of what he had done, or why. He talked about his childhood struggles and how fearful of failure he was.

Rothstein said he had no reason to steal, “other than unbridled envy, pure greed and the absolute inability to deal with even the slightest notion of failure."

More details on Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein's 50 year sentence are available from the South Florida Business Journal
