Big Cities, Big Job Losses

America’s metropolitan areas haven’t turned the corner yet.

Ninety-seven of the nation’s 100 biggest markets lost private-sector jobs between April 2009 and April 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The exceptions were Honolulu, Hawaii and New Haven, Connecticut, which each added 1,200 private-sector jobs, and Charleston, South Carolina, which was unchanged over the year.

The biggest decline occurred in the Chicago area, which lost 101,500 private-sector jobs during the past 12 months.

More details and a searchable database of job loss data in 100 major cities is available from Business First of Buffalo.
