Inside White House Salaries

Looking for a good benchmark for what to pay top talent? You always can measure compensation against what the folks in the White House earn. Newsweek has the dirt on the White House payroll, which is $38.7 million and covers 460 people. Compared to the king's ransoms available on Wall Street, these are small numbers:

President Obama earns the most: $400,000 a year. Vice President Joe Biden comes in second with a salary of $221,000.

The next two highest-paid officials, who earn $179,000, are relatively obscure. Timothy P. Love is a research director at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, and Michael Hash is a health care "detailee."

The next salary rung includes chief of staff Rahm Emanuel ($172, 200), adviser David Axelrod ($172,000), and National Economic Council director Larry Summers.

Now you can say "I'm not paying your more than the president" or "I'm not paying you more than Rahm Emanuel" the next time an employee demands a raise.
