Sinking Ship Gets New Life

James Cameron is not one to rest on his laurels, or a mere pittance of $600 million. The director tells USA Today that he plans to bring Titanic back to theaters in 2012, 100 years after the titular ship sank on its maiden voyage.

Of course, the movie will have been given the 3D treatment between now and then.

Titanic, after bringing in $600 million domestically in its box-office run, was passed by Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar in January as the top-grossing movie of all time. So far, Avatar has brought in an estimated $730 million.

The revenue figures come from Box Office Mojo, a division of Amazon.com's IMDb.

A big driver in Avatar's success was the premiums tacked on to tickets for 3-D and IMAX 3-D showings, which will of course help Titanic bring in more money, and potentially regain its throne from Avatar.

It remains to be seen, however, how many do flock to see Titanic after 15 years, endless showings on television, and the evolution of Leonardo DiCaprio from mere teenage eye candy to Oscar-nominated actor.

Oh, and, barring a major ego trip by Cameron—which he might be on after getting bested by his ex-wife at the Oscars—the ship will still sink at the end of the movie.
