Window Media Closes 'Washington Blade' and Other Gay and Lesbian Publications
Window Media, publishers of gay and lesbian newspapers including the Washington Blade, Southern Voice, Houston Voice, and others, has closed down, according to several reports, including the Associated Press. The Washington Blade confirmed the news in a Twitter post that read, "Washington Blade, like all Window Media publications, is closing today. Thank you for your support. (Keep following us for developments.)" The Blade has been in print for 40 years and had 400,000 readers weekly according to AFP.
Thomas Wheatley of Creative Loafing's Fresh Loaf blog has been updating the Window Media story since it broke, quoting Southern Voice editor Laura Douglas-Brown as expressing surprise at the companywide closure and calling it "not just a loss for the employees, but the gay community as well.”
This news comes a little over a week after Here Media, a multimedia company geared towards gay and lesbian consumers, announced it would be bundling its two magazine titles, Out and the Advocate, to save money on distribution costs.
