The Budget Ax Falls at Condé Nast

After months of speculation about the future of some of its titles, Condé Nast will be folding Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride, and Elegant Bride, according to the New York Times' Stephanie Clifford, writing on the paper's Media Decoder blog.

Condé Nast is owned by Advance Publications, which is also the parent company of American City Business Journals, publishers of Portfolio.com. (Portfolio was launched by Condé Nast in April 2007 and folded in April 2009.)

These cuts come after Condé Nast contracted the consulting firm McKinsey to examine its magazines' budgets.

Gourmet will live on in book publishing and television, and its recipes will be posted on Epicurios.com. Gawker has a memo from Condé Nast CEO Chuck Townsend explaining the moves: "The editorial and business staffs of Modern Bride, Elegant Bride, Gourmet, and Cookie all have earned their magazines large and devoted followings. We have been proud to publish these titles, and we are grateful to the staffs for their hard work and dedication," he wrote.

In the past few years, Condé Nast has shed several titles from its stable, among them Cargo (2006), Domino (2009), and DNR (2008) and has scaled back Men's Vogue and Vogue Living.
