Yahoo Is All About You!
Remember when You were Time magazine's person of the year in 2006?
Sure You do. There was even a shiny mirror on the cover so You could look at Yourself.
Now Yahoo wants You to know its site is all about You too. According to the Wall Street Journal's Suzanne Vranica and Jessica E. Vascellaro, Yahoo is launching a new ad campaign with the tagline, "It's You!" (We can only imagine the furtive looks from side to side in the conference room as that winning concept was presented.)
Created by Ogilvy & Mather, the reported $100 million campaign will center around Yahoo's personalization service. The Journal didn't have many details about the ads, but anything has gotta be better than last year's "Start Wearing Purple" ads, which featured baffling hidden-camera stunts and a cloying refrain from Gogol Bordello's ode to wearing…purple. Valleywag's Nicholas Carlson condemned those ads saying, "What's tragic about [the campaign] is that the brand Yahoo is trying to create isn't particularly attractive. Look, it screams we're so desperate to be seen as kooky kids…"
The new ads haven't even been unveiled yet but they're already drawing criticism. The blog Seeking Alpha writes, "Sorry, Yahoo, it’s not us, it’s You that needs to change."
What will the "It's You!" ads look like? You'll know soon enough.
