Oprah Picks 'Say You're One of Them' For Book Club
Now it's official. The new Oprah's Book Club selection is, in fact, Uwen Akpan's Say You're One of Them, according to Oprah.com's official announcement. Oprah's Twitter feed also had the news, with Oprah exclaiming, "My first collection of short stories. Let me know what you think!" (Oh, and we owe the Washington Post Book World's fiction editor, Ron Charles, an apology for for doubting him yesterday.)
Even before Akpan's book was revealed, at least one critic was sharpening his knife. Rob Spillman, editor of Tin House, took to the Huffington Post to call Akpan "a maudlin, sappy writer, and his book only reinforces Western stereotypes about Africa—that it is a wasteland of child soldiers, poverty, and corruption." He concluded, "Oprah could have done a lot better."
The book is now #133 on Amazon's sales chart. As we mentioned earlier this week, this is a gonna be a great week for Hachette Book Group: Say You're One of Them and Teddy Kennedy's memoir, True Compass, are both released by divisions of the company.
