Vibe Names New Editor

Vibe magazine has a new editor: Jermaine Hall.

According to the New York Times, Mr. Hall will be overseeing the now-quarterly magazine and daily Web site of hip hop music and culture. Earlier this month, Uptown Media bought the shuttered magazine for an undisclosed amount.

In an interview with the Web site SOHH in April 2008, Hall, then editor of the African American men's magazine King, said, "Make a commitment to the industry. Just because you run a[n] 'urban magazine' doesn't mean you can just study those books. You should still be reading magazines like GQ, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and New York Magazine and enjoying it. Those are where I get some of my best ideas because they have nothing to do with the world that I'm in, so it helps me come up with out of the box stuff."

One person extremely excited about Hall's new job is hip hop entrepreneur Sean "Diddy" Combs who tweeted yesterday, "Congrats to my man @jermainehall becoming the new Editor-in-Chief of Vibe and Vibe.com!!! Lets Go!!!"

Not everyone's happy about Hall's appointment. Media gadfly Bucky Turco headlined a post on his Animal New York site "Vibe Names Misogynist As New EIC, highlighting some of the scanty clad King cover models published under Hall and speculating, "The decision to bring Hall onboard offers some insight into the strategy of the urban culture magazine’s relaunch: tits and ass!"

He'll see when the first issue of Hall's Vibe hits newsstands in November.
