Fenway Sports Group Buys Minor League Baseball Team
Fenway Sports Group has purchased the Single-A Carolina League Salem Avalanche, marking the first baseball-related asset to come under the ownership umbrella of the New England Sports Venture-controlled operation.
The Avalanche is an affiliate of the Houston Astros, a relationship it will continue through the 2008 season. The deal is subject to approval from Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
"The Salem Avalanche is a model minor league sports franchise with a rich history, having played in a region that has supported professional baseball for more than a century," Mike Dee, president of Fenway Sports Group, said in a statement.
It's the second big purchase that Fenway Sports Group has made this year. This past February the company bought the Nascar acing team Roush Fenway Racing.
