ESPN May Seek to Acquire Premier League Soccer TV Rights
ESPN may bid for the United Kingdom television rights to English soccer's Premier League when they are auctioned next in 2009, the Financial Times reported, citing ESPN President George Bodenheimer.
ESPN could find itself bidding against British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc, which agreed to a three-year contract for 1.3 billion pounds ($2.64 billion) in 2006, for the largest array of live games available, the newspaper reported.
ESPN plans an international expansion, the Financial Times said. The Premier League is a ``fabulous property'' in which ESPN is ``absolutely interested,'' the newspaper cited Bodenheimer as saying.
ESPN, is 80 percent owned by ABC, a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Co. The cable network continues to expand outside the United States, where it has long-term agreements to broadcast football, basketball and baseball. ESPN recently purchased cricket website Cricinfo and rugby site Scrum.com.
What could be a more logical addition to the ESPN stable than top-flight soccer?
