Dodgers Tab Former Ravens Executive Mannion as COO
Joe Torre isn't the only addition to the Los Angeles Dodgers hierarchy this week.
Dennis Mannion was named chief operating officer of the Dodgers today, replacing Marty Greenspun, who resigned earlier this week.
The 48-year-old Mannion comes to the Dodgers after eight years as senior vice president for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens. He also worked 16 years for the Philadelphia Phillies and for the holding company of the NBA's Denver Nuggets and the NHL"s Colorado Avalanche.
"The Dodgers are truly one of the most powerful and enduring brands in sports and being able to work with that level of IP was very attractive to me,'' said Mannion. "Baseball overall has been on a great economic roll, but I still see considerable upside for the game in general and the Dodgers in particular.''
One issue sure to be on Mannion's plate is the transition from the team's longtime Spring Training facility in Vero Beach, Florida, to Glendale, Arizona, in 2009.
Mannion also will oversee corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, retail operations, concessions and broadcasting and coordinate the club's marketing.
The Dodgers need help, no doubt. With fresh direction from Torre on the field and Mannion's experienced eye behind the scenes, better times should be ahead.
