ARod Opts Out as Red Sox Win World Series... Is It 2008 Yet?
Is it an accident that news of Alex Rodriguez apparently opting out of his contract with the New York Yankees comes just as the Boston Red Sox were winning a second World World Series in four seasons?
Nope.
It's all about headlines and dominating the airwaves. Agent Scott Boras knows how the game works, and he's looking for every conceivable bit of leverage. News of the much-awaited decision for the soon-to-be American League Most Valuable Player came from SI.com's Jon Heyman late Sunday.
Boras said he sent word in writing of the opt-out in writing Sunday to the Yankees and expected the club to receive it by Monday, SI.com said. No comment yet from the Yankees.
Now what? The Yankees still have 10 days to change ARod's mind. They had reportedly been preparing a contract extension offer to their high-priced third baseman.

However, Boras says Rodriguez couldn't even consider any pre-opt-out deadline offers from the Yankees until they settled several situations, specifically mentioning impending free agency of closer Mariano Rivera and catcher Jorge Posada and uncertainty surrounding pitcher Andy Pettitte.
What a bunch of baloney.
Boras thinks ARod can garner $30 million a year elsewhere.
Maybe even from the defending-champion Red Sox.
