Chargers To Host Sunday's Game at Home as Fires Subside

The San Diego Chargers will host the Houston Texans after all on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium, according to the city of San Diego.

"Early Friday morning the Chargers informed me that the NFL has decided to play Sunday's game as scheduled at Qualcomm Stadium," Mayor Jerry Sanders said. "The City will be able to provide sufficient public safety personnel to manage a professional football game without impeding ongoing wildfire recovery efforts."

About 45 players, coaches and Chargers staff members had to evacuate their suburban homes starting early Monday. Among them were running back LaDainian Tomlinson, quarterback Philip Rivers, coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith.

The team cancelled practice Monday, then flew to Phoenix on Tuesday night for three days of practice at the Arizona Cardinals' headquarters. The Chargers were scheduled to practice there on Friday afternoon.

Qualcomm was being used as a shelter for families evacuated from their homes because of the devastating wildfires in the region this week. The city was set to close Qualcomm as an emergency shelter on Friday afternoon.
