Yankees Play Hardball With ESPN

The Yankees and ESPN are at it again.

The Yankees barred the sports giant from media conference calls this week with managerial candidates Don Mattingly, Joe Girardi and Tony Pena in retaliation for the network violating rules covering last week's call on which it was announced Joe Torre had rejected a contract offer.

ESPN angered the Yankees last Thursday when it played the call with team executives live on ESPN2, violating ground rules that barred live coverage.

"If the only dialogue ESPN is going to give me is that, 'We are going to do whatever we want to do,' it leaves me with very few alternatives," Yankees media relations director Jason Zillo told Newsday. "I don't take any pride in stiff-arming people. That is not how I like to do business."

Zillo said the ban applies to ESPN's TV and radio reporters, including ESPN 1050.

So apparently, ESPN does not get its way all the time.
