U.S. Open Sets Attendance Record By Surpassing 700,000 For First Time

With yesterday's crowd of 25,230 witnessing Roger Federer's record fourth-straight
U.S. Open title, the tournament set a record 14-day attendance total of 721,087.

It was the first time the final Grand Slam event of the year exceeded 700,000, the USTA said. That will happen when nary a drop of rain falls during the entire two weeks of tennis.

The ever-genial Federer, who has now won 12 Grand Slam titles, appeared on NBC's "Today" this morning with his close friend, the U.S. Open championship trophy.

"It's fun now,'' said Federer, who needs just two more Slam wins to tie Pete Sampras' record of 14. ``It used to be pressure, to be honest. I didn't enjoy it so much when people were saying, 'Oh, he's probably going to break it or he's going to get close or he's got a chance'"

Federer, attired again in his all-black Nike outfit as he beat Novak Djokovic in three tough sets, has also won five consecutive Wimbledon titles and the Australian Open three times. He's yet to win the French Open on the red clay of Roland Garros.

The U.S. Open's previous attendance record was 659,563, reached in 2005 when Andre Agassi has his magical run to the title match, where Federer was waiting. That tournament also experienced virtually no rain.
