Hurricanes' Fans Seek Mementos with Orange Bowl About to Close

I wonder if former Miami Hurricanes coach Jimmy Johnson will be buying?

With Miami's venerable Orange Bowl in its final season as home to the University of Miami Hurriances, fans are "snapping up mementos and tickets," according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

"I think everyone would like to do something to commemorate the season." Collegiate Licensing Co. Dir of Univ. Services Mike Carlton said told the newspaper.

Companies, including jersey and equipment provider Nike, are "preparing souvenirs to commemorate the season." The University of Miami gets a 10 percent royalty on the wholesale cost of merchandise that bears its name and logos.

Models of the Orange Bowl, which sell for $40-$90, and posters with a panoramic view of the venue have been "selling briskly since the decision," said allCanes GM Harry Rothwell, whose store is near the UM campus.

Johnson coached the Hurricanes from 1984-88, compiling a 52-9 record with five Miami appearances in New Year's Day bowl games (back when the big games actually were played on Jan. 1) and winning the national championship in 1987.
