Idle Chatter: 'FT' Cutbacks, Condi's Book Deal, more

-The Financial Times has to cut staffing costs, but it's trying to do so in a way that gives employees some say in the matter. Staffers are being given the option of "buying" extra vacation days, working shorter weeks over the summer or taking an extended leave at 30 percent pay. [Reuters; WSJ (sub)]

-Crown Publishers has signed former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to a three-book deal worth at least $2.5 million. First up is a memoir about her time in the Bush Administration. [AP]

-Americans are watching more TV than ever, if you include the viewing they do on computers and mobile devices. The average viewer watches 151 hours a month. Eep. [B&C]

-A New York Daily News op-ed on "How to Get NY Building Again" contained a "hidden agenda," according to Post columnist Steve Cuozzo: enriching Daily News owner Mort Zuckerman, whose primary business is real estate. [NYP]

-Larry Brilliant, the head of Google's charity arm, Google.org, is stepping down. He'll become the company's "chief philanthropy evangelist," whatever that means. [NYT]. □
