Doubledown Refugees Gather for 'Sorrowfest 2009'

Employees of the now-defunct Doubledown Media gathered at the White Rabbit on Manhattan's Lower East Side last night to hold a wake for their fallen enterprise, erstwhile publisher of Trader Monthly, Dealmaker and other titles for the well-heeled. According to the invitation, the gathering's official name was "Sorrowfest 2009 -- which may well morph, within a few hours, into Bitterpalooza 2009, before finally being rebranded Bitchandcryorama 2009. (Proceeds of all Sorrowfest, Bitterpalooza and Bitchandcryorama t-shirts will, ironically enough, be seized by representatives of HSBC at the door.)"

A Doubledown refugee who attended says turnout was high -- at least 50 people showed up to take advantage of the two-for-one drink special. (Doubledown, get it?) Some were surprised when chief financial officer Paul Fish made an appearances, considering how many of those in attendance are still owed considerable sums of money by the company. Randall Lane, Doubledown's president, was not on hand. "No one wanted to see him," says the refugee. □
