Prediction: 'Today' Show Bound for Evening Slot

Could Meredith and Matt join Jay in prime time? The Atlantic's Michael Hirschorn thinks so. Pondering the significance of NBC's decision to create a new 10 p.m. show for Jay Leno, Hirschorn concludes that the networks will gradually back away from expensively-produced scripted fare in favor of the sort of perishable live or near-live programming that now inhabits morning and late-night hours:

NBC got strong ratings, for instance, by running politically themed Saturday Night Live prime-time specials on Thursdays during election season, and it's almost inevitable that SNL, or a live or topical show that shares its DNA, will appear regularly in prime time in the near future. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Today show, or some version thereof, started appearing in the 8 p.m. slot before long.
