Late Breaks: Counting the Casualties, more

-Some 41,000 media jobs have been eliminated since the start of the recession, 31,000 of them in newspapers. [Ad Age]

-Steve Brill has some ideas about how to save the jobs of the people who work at The New York Times. Unfortunately, his idea depends on "an iTunes-like journalism infrastructure" involving micropayments. I'll leave it to Felix and Gabe Sherman to explain what's wrong with that logic. [Poynter.org]

-With all the talk about layoffs, you might think it's an opportune time to start a website about how to survive a recession. Two of my former Portfolio colleagues have done just that. Their site's called Recessionwire, and it launched today. [NYT]. □
