Duly Quoted: Harry Evans Disses Mort Zuckerman

"I'm so pleased that a newspaper man, Murdoch, even though people would expect me to say the opposite because of my struggles with him, I'm so pleased [that] somebody who appreciates what newspapers are is running The Wall Street Journal rather than some real estate guy who comes in and [says], "How can we cut the cost around here? What about cutting off the phones, for a start?"

-Distinguished editor and writer Sir Harold Evans, interviewed on Bloomberg TV's Night Talk. Among the newspapers Evans has worked for is the New York Daily News, owned by real estate mogul Mort Zuckerman. He resigned as its editorial director in 1999; press reports at the time suggested "budgetary constraints" were to blame.. □
