Obama Inauguration Defies Satire

Is the start of Barack Obama's presidency too important to fool around with? The Week thinks so. The new edition of the Dennis Publishing-owned newsweekly features a photo of the new president and first lady rather than a cartoon-style illustration. It's only the fourth time The Week has gone this route; it also used photos for covers on Hurricane Katrina, Terri Schiavo and Obama's general election victory.

"Basically when something is so historic or tragic that we don't believe there is an effective illo treatment that serves the story and the reader, we opt for photos," says Steven Kotok, the magazine's general manager. He adds, however, that The Week is likely to mix in photo covers more often in the future, and is also considering getting rid of the vertical strip down the side promoting other stories.
