Anthrax Scare at 'The Wall Street Journal'

Whoever's been sending envelopes of white powder to newsrooms turned his or her sights on The Wall Street Journal this week. The paper was forced to evacuate the floor of its building that houses its executives and editorial-page staff today after 13 envelopes were received containing an unknown substance. One of the envelopes was addressed to managing editor Robert Thomson, according to the Journal; his assistant opened it.

Back in October, someone sent similar letters to The New York Times and Reuters, as well as to several financial institutions. Though obviously intended to evoke the deadly anthrax mailings of 2001, which killed five people and sickened many more, the recent mailings were found to be non-hazardous. □
