Idle Chatter: Mega-layoffs; Steve Jobs and CNBC

-Layoff watch, big-league edition: Microsoft, Google, Barnes & Noble. [WSJ, MW, NYT]

-CNBC is catching some heat for its over-credulous reporting of Steve Jobs's health, which, as we learned yesterday, is worse than he's previously admitted. [SAI, Gawker]

-Tribune Co. is considering a plan to close its foreign bureaus and pay the Washington Post to provide coverage from overseas. Meanwhile, the New York Daily News is looking to beef up its foreign coverage with content from the new start-up globalpost.com. [WSJ]

-A major magazine distributor, Anderson News, is looking to hit publishers with a new 7-cent charge for every copy it handles. Fortunately, it's coming at a time when the magazine business is healthy enough to bear the added cost. D'oh! [NYP]

-Kurt Andersen is discontinuing his New York magazine column. [The Daily]

-Did Oprah Winfrey screw over her diet guru by gaining a bunch of weight right before his new book came out? [NYT]. □
