Idle Chatter: Presidential Sign-Off, 'Idol,' Alec, more

-George Bush has asked the networks to give him 15 minutes of airtime for a farewell address Thursday night. [Variety]

-American Idol is going to try not to humiliate its untalented contestants quite so deeply this season. [NYT]

-The New York Philharmonic has hired Alec Baldwin to host its radio broadcasts after an employee of the orchestra read The New Yorker's terrific profile of the actor, in which he mentioned his desire to DJ a classical-music show. [P6]

-Country Weekly is eliminating subscriptions and going newsstand-only, a move that will reduce its circulation by 83 percent. [Ad Age]

-Condé Nast (which owns Portfolio) has assigned the publisher of Glamour to oversee Domino, which, like other shelter magazines, has been struggling to attract enough advertising. [NYP]. □
