'Times' Admits: We Were Duped by Phony Mayor

The New York Times is vaulting forward into the blog age with a new plan to publish "instant" op-eds in response to news, but before it rolls that out, it might want to work out the kinks on its letters page.

The paper admitted today that a letter it published purporting to be from the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, was actually a hoax. In the letter, "Delanoe" criticized the idea of appointing Caroline Kennedy to replace Hillary Clinton as senator from New York.

In an editor's note, the Times said it received the phony letter by email, and tried but failed to confirm that the real Bertrand Delanoe was the author before going to print.

Somewhere, Sarah Palin is cringing in sympathy.
