For Chris Matthews, a Senate Dream Deferred?

Chris Matthews, you cad, have you been toying with us?

After months of flirting with the notion of running for one of Pennsylvania's two Senate seats, it looks like the towheaded Hardball host is merely going to renew his contract with MSNBC. Phil Griffin, the network's president, tells the Hollywood Reporter that after talking to Matthews recently, "I think he's going to be here for a long time." Meanwhile, NBC News chief Steve Capus flatly tells Broadcasting & Cable that Matthews "is not running for office." (And if he does, Capus joked, the network may replace him with Muntadar al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President Bush. Hey, get our own jokes, Steve!)

Is Matthews giving up on his childhood dream too easily? When I asked whether the reliably gaffe-prone talker had a chance in hell at surviving a Senate race, a surprising 57 percent of you said yes.
