Idle Chatter: How Jay Said Nay to USA, more
-Jeff Zucker made all sorts of offers to Jay Leno before they agreed to a 10 p.m. hour-long show on NBC. Among them: an 8 p.m. half-hour, and an hour on the USA network starting at 11. [NYT]
-Borders has agreed to a unique arrangement with HarperStudio, the new low-overhead imprint of HarperCollins. The book chain is forgoing its right to return unsold books to the publisher in exchange for a deeper discount. [Reuters]
-The S.E.C. has charged National Lampoon with conspiracy and securities fraud, saying the humor company offered kickbacks to stock buyers in a bid to drive up the share price. [Portfolio]
-Macmillan Publishing has eliminated 64 jobs, or nearly 4 percent of its workforce. That includes about 10 jobs at Scientific American magazine. [PW]
