Idle Chatter: Layoffs, Cutbacks, Downsizing, etc.

-Layoffs commenced yesterday at NBC Universal, which is looking to slim its budget by 3 percent. All told, about 500 people wil be let go, with the heaviest losses coming in the news division. [NYP]

-Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will lay off "at least several hundred" of its 5,300 employees as it restructures its textbook-publishing unit. The publisher has already suspended acquisitions of new manuscripts. [WSJ]

-OK is publishing only double issues through the end of the year to save money. [NYP]

-E.W. Scripps Co. is putting the Rocky Mountain News up for sale, desperate to be rid of the money-losing paper. [E&P]

-It's official: Bill O'Reilly is going off the air early next year. (Just the radio, people. Don't get excited.) [NYDN]. □
