Obama Win Sparks Run on Newsstands

Here's one possible future for ink-and-paper newspapers: as souvenirs.

The Washington Post says it sold out within hours of going on sale today, even though it increased its retail distribution by 30 percent. The Post is planning to print another 150,000 copies of a commemorative edition that will go on sale this afternoon. The Chicago Tribune is also among the papers going back to press to satisfy demand.

Maybe papers ought to start printing multiple "Collector's Edition" front pages a la TV Guide. "Special Iraq War Issue: Collect All Six!"

Update: The New York Times also went back to press, for an extra 50,000 copies.

Update 2: USA Today says it boosted its print run by 380,000 copies, to 2.8 million, and still sold out. It's printing more to sell online.

Update 3: Tribune Co. says it has increased the print runs of its eight papers by 10 to 100 percent to satisfy demand. Obama's hometown paper, the Chicago Tribune, went back to press for an additional 200,000 copies. □
