Late Breaks: MSNBC Tops CNN; Google Settles

-In October, for the first time in its 12-year history, MSNBC beat CNN for a full month in the adults 25-54 demographic during primetime hours. Rachel Maddow had a lot to do with it. [THR]

-Layoff patrol: The latest victims of the downsizing mania in publishing are 16 staffers at Doubleday. [Media Mob]

-Google has agreed to pay $125 million to settle a lawsuit by the Author's Guild, which took exception to the web giant's plan to scan every book in existence. [AP]

-CNN is starting its own wire service. [E&P]. □
