Gov. Ahnold: Mr. Universe Trumps Miss Alaska
Arnold Schwarzenegger may have just quipped himself out of a cabinet job.
Interviewed by Time editor Rick Stengel at the American Magazine Conference yesterday, the Terminator star got laughs with a joke about a certain fellow Republican governor. "You know, I remember that when McCain picked Sarah Palin I called her and I said to her, 'You see, that's what's wrong with the Constitution,'" he said. "I said, 'Miss Alaska is beating Mr. Universe and can run for vice-president or become president. There's something off here.' She didn't think it was that funny."
Kidding aside, Schwarzenegger told Stengel he believes the Constitution should be amended to allow immigrants like him to serve as president.
I think that we should revisit -- there was a time when there was a reason for that and I think that today one has to revisit this subject and look at it again, even if I never benefit from it. I think me being around makes it more difficult, because of course there's another party that just automatically will say no to that idea because they will think that I could be part of the race. So I think it maybe has to go past that and just address this issue in the future. I think it ought to be addressed, because it's a different country today, it's a different world today and I think that it's always good to revisit those things and to see if it does need a little bit of upgrading.
Schwarzenegger also talked about the political situation in his own home. His wife, former NBC News correspondent Maria Shriver, is a member of the Kennedy clan and an Obama supporter.
I never try to convince Maria to think Republican, because I knew she came from a long tradition of Democrats in her family. And I, when I went to the alter, when I married here, I said, "I take this woman in sickness and in health." And being a Democrat is a sickness.
Meanwhile, he said his 15-year-old son is "way to the right of me, politically. He's telling me, he says, 'Why are you letting this happen in this state? Why don't you cut the programs?' So he's telling me that I have to be more conservative."
(Note: I missed the session; this is from a transcript provided by Time.)
