Status Report: Michael Wolff's Newser.com

When Michael Wolff heard that his old pal Tina Brown would be competing against him in the online news business, he memorably quipped that "last time I looked Tina was still having trouble getting her email."

Now comes Brown's chance to make him eat those words, with her site, The Daily Beast, launching next week. And revenge should be within reach for someone backed by Barry Diller's money: Wolff's aggregator, Newser.com has been growing only slowly, if steadily, since its launch a year ago:

I plotted it against the Drudge Report and Daylife because those are the sites Wolff himself name-checked when previewing his idea in Vanity Fair. Wolff is planning to release official numbers next week.

Email or no, Brown may have him outgunned: The Daily Beast, which will feature original content as well as aggregation of other outlets' stories, is launching with a staff of about 20, including 12 in editorial.
