Obama's 'Rolling Stone' Encore: Meh

RS-obama-cover.jpg

Speaking of Rolling Stone's political coverage, how did that risky, text-free Barack Obama cover sell? In fact, it was a bit of a dud.

While the July 10 issue sold an above-average 204,064 copies, according to ABC Rapid Report, that number becomes less impressive when you consider it was one of Rolling Stone's two annual double issues. Last summer's double, the 40th-anniversary issue, sold 240,000 thousand copies; the 2006 edition, with Johnny Depp on the cover, did even better, with 252,000. To find a summer double that did worse than the Barack Obama issue, you have to go back to 2005, when Jessica Alba was on the cover to promote her epically bad movie Fantastic Four.
