'NY Sun' Editor: 'There Is Still Some Hope'
What's going on with the New York Sun? Two weeks ago the paper revealed that it was on the verge of shutting down unless it can find some new investors, and fast. I got a (very limited) progress report last night when I ran into managing editor and vice president Ira Stoll at a party hosted by Nextbook and thrown, in part, to celebrate the arrival of its new editor in chief, Alana Newhouse (who stresses that she is not part of the same family that owns Portfolio).
"It's a very fluid situation," Stoll told me. "It's all going to resolve very quickly." He avoided going into specifics -- and was cagey when I asked whether New York Observer owner Jared Kushner, who shares some ideological affinities with the strongly pro-Israel Sun, was on his call list -- but did note that plenty of politicians have come out in support, most recently Congressman Anthony Weiner, who praised the paper on the floor of the House of Representatives. (Weiner called the Sun "the only outlet in New York City right now...that's truly covering civic affairs in New York.")
And while I'm hearing that Sun employees are bracing for a Sept. 29 shutdown date, Stoll says that's not yet a foregone conclusion: "There is still some hope."
