'Stuff White People Like' Book a Crossover Hit
The blog to book curse has been broken! Or at least dented.
Stuff White People Like, a Random House paperback based on a satirical website about, uh, stuff white people like, has only been out for two weeks, but it has already sold around 7,000 copies, according to Nielsen BookScan. (And since BookScan only registers about 70 percent of sales, that means the real number is closer to 10,000.) The brisk sales were good enough to put it on the upcoming edition of the New York Times paperback non-fiction best sellers list, at No. 19. That Kurt Andersen knows how to pick 'em.
Of course, that doesn't guarantee Stuff White People Like will make money for Random House. When news of the deal first came out, Publishers Weekly editor Sara Nelson estimated the title would have to sell 75,000 copies to earn back the reported $300,000-plus advance given to author Christian Lander.
But in any case, it's a lot better than most previous blog-inspired books have done -- for instance, this one.
