'WSJ' Now the Paper of Off-the-Record

First, Slate's Jack Shafer said that The Wall Street Journal relies on anonymous sources less than do The New York Times, the Washington Post or the Los Angeles Times. Then CJR's Dean Starkman retorted that, no, actually, the Journal grants anonymity more often than the other big dailies.

Who's right? Using a somewhat-more-scientific-than-Shafer's methodology, my Portfolio colleague Zubin Jelveh ruled in favor of Starkman -- but he also found out something more interesting along the way. See what that was here. □
