NBC Embraces Citizen Journalism, Cautiously

Is NBC looking for a little Mayhill Fowler mojo of its own? The network, and its cable sibling, are partnering with MySpace in a contest to find two "citizen journalists" to report from the presidential nominating conventions later this summer. The winners' work will be featured on MySpace's Decision 2008 channel, and considered for use on NBC and MSNBC.

But don't expect to see any incognito ambush journalism on Nightly News anytime soon. While the Huffington Post was happy enough to let Fowler pass herself off as a supporter for the purpose of sticking it to Bill Clinton, an NBC spokesman says that sort of rule-bending wouldn't fly: "We'll make sure that appropriate news standards are met for any material that is published or shown on NBC News and MSNBC news platforms and networks.". □
