Number Crunch: Hachette Then and Now
Earlier this week, Hachette Filipacchi Media signaled an end to Jack Kliger's nine-year run as CEO. I pointed out that Kliger has shuttered a lot of magazines during that time, beginning with Mirabella and moving on to George, ElleGirl, Shock and Premiere.
That made me wonder: What about the magazines Kliger hasn't folded? See for yourself below. Of the 12 current Hachette titles that were around when Kliger took over, only three -- Elle, Elle Decor and Metropolitan Home -- had more ad pages last year than they did in 1999 (which was, to be fair, a boom year for magazines in general. Meanwhile, four are down by double digits. And Elle's improvement on the ad front has been widely credited to its affiliation with Project Runway, an affiliation that seems likely to end soon.
