The Takeaway: The Last Days of Newspapers

Maybe it's the hyper-public convulsions at Tribune Co., but something's got newspaper industry observers in a grim mood...

BusinessWeek's Jon Fine: "As crazy as this once sounded, I'm now convinced one or more major American markets will lose their daily newspaper within 18 months."

Bloomberg: Newspaper ad sales were down 14 percent in the first quarter, according to the Newspaper Association of America, the eighth such drop in a row.

Alan Mutter: Some big-box retailers are increasing their advertising, but a lot of them are also going out of business, and paper costs are expected to rise 25 percent this year. "Talk about potential death spirals."

Fortune Stanley Bing (the contrarian): "Newspapers have been around a long time, from medieval days through the time of Horace Greeley (above) and beyond. Radio didn't kill them. TV didn't kill them. The internet will not kill them.". □
