Duly Quoted: 'The Week's' Falk on Newsweeklies

"They're fishing around to try to figure out exactly what their new role is going to be, and sometimes it's trend stories, and sometimes it's 'Oh, My Aching Knees,' a cover story on osteoarthritis for baby boomers...and why the dinosaurs died, and who was Jesus, really....They're a little lost, honestly.

Bill Falk, editor in chief of The Week, outlining the plight of Newsweek and Time, which he calls "very excellent publications" that are in a very bad place. Falk, whose staff scours hundreds of periodicals and websites every week, also identified what he considers the finest American newspaper -- and it's not The New York Times.
