Tom Freston, International Man of Mystery

Where in the world is Tom Freston? If you believe Vanity Fair, he's in Afghanistan. The former Viacom chief is listed on the June 2008 issue's masthead as "our man in Kabul," an apparent reference to a story he's reportedly writing about his return to the region after 30 years.

But Freston was definitively not in Kabul when I saw him this afternoon having lunch with former Lehman Bros. executive Alan Mnuchin at Milos Estiatorio in Midtown. Asked why he was listed as a Vanity Fair contributor, Freston merely said, "I am? I'll have to pick one up."
