Idle Chatter: Yahoo Heats Up; Matthews Is a Nut

-So much for Microsoft's Yahoo courtship coming down to a boring endgame. Now News Corp.'s back in the action, as a potential partner for Microsoft, while a Yahoo-AOL merger is once again looking like a serious possibility, too. [Portfolio]

-Rather than just cut Katie Couric loose to take over for Larry King or whatever, CBS might try to keep her on by giving her a syndicated talk show. [WaPo]

-The Wall Street Journal has hired a launch publisher for its new glossy magazine, WSJ. It's former Travel & Leisure publisher Ellen Asmodeo. [WWD]

-Barack Obama is being standoffish toward the gay press. So don't feel so singled-out, Bill O'Reilly. [Politico]

-New York magazine's "This is New York: 1968-2008" cover has way too many white dudes on it, and not enough of everyone else. [Huffpo]
