Idle Chatter: Publisher Declares War on Advances

-HarperCollins is starting a new unit that will try to improve on existing (crappy) publishing economics by offering authors bigger royalties in return for accepting small or no advances. [NYT]

-It's very possible that Tribune Co. could default on its debts in 2009, the way things are going. [Reuters]

-Both houses of Congress are preparing bills that would give the F.D.A. greater power to regulate cigarette advertising. [WWD]

-Carnie Wilson is hoping a celebrity magazine will pay her for the rights to cover her as she tries to lose weight. (For those of you who haven't been keeping up, apparently she is fat again.) [NYP]
