'Newsday' Media Reporter Among Bought-Out

Having covered the media business for years, Newsday's Aileen Jacobson is better than most at reading the writing on the newspaper industry wall. So it's no great surprise to learn she was among the 36 newsroom employees at the paper to accept a voluntary buyout. Newsday said last week that enough people had volunteered for buyouts to avert the prospect of layoffs -- at least for now.

Jacobson, who's been focusing her coverage on book publishing and the arts for the past several years, is ending a 34-year run at the paper (which appears likely to be sold to one New York-area mogul or another by year's end). She says she plans to freelance and write books. □
