Rumor: Rare 'Esquire' Shut-Out at Mag Awards?

Can it be true, as I'm hearing, that this year's National Magazine Award judges declined to nominate Esquire in even a single category? That would be remarkable, if it's accurate, as the Hearst-owned men's magazine has been a finalist -- usually in multiple categories -- in every full year that David Granger has been its editor in chief. (He took over in mid-1997.)

It would also be bad timing, as the magazine has been touting its glorious journalistic history this year as part of its 75th-anniversary celebration.

I'm having a tough time confirming the shut-out. The American Society of Magazine Editors doesn't announce the full list of finalists until tomorrow afternoon, and won't have much to say about it before then. Granger, meanwhile, professes not to be sure if it's true -- "and even if I was, to say anything would be to defile the oath of confidentiality all judges of the National Magazine Awards take." So I'm exercising my prerogative as a blogger and taking a flier on this ...
