'SI' to Publish Special Brett Favre Issue

Brett Favre is packing it in -- but not before Sports Illustrated gets one more newsstand bump out of him. On Monday, SI will publish a newsstand-only commemorative issue celebrating the Green Bay quarterback's career, according to a Time Inc. source.

Retailing for $7.99, the issue will consist mostly of archival material, but it will contain a new essay by columnist Peter King, a sportswriter whose fanboy-like regard for Favre has made him a frequent target for humor among sports obsessives. (King filed his story on Favre's retirement from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where he's touring U.S. military bases with NFL players.) King also wrote this back-pager* for last year's Sportsman of the Year issue honoring Favre. That issue sold so well in Wisconsin, SI ended up resorting to its first-ever third printing to satisfy demand.
