Scandal-Bitten 'Maxim' Loses Top Editor, Sales

These are not the best of times for Maxim. On top of getting busted publishing "reviews" of albums its writers had never heard, the somewhat-reformed lad magazine has lost its No. 2, A.J. Baime. Last month, Baime quietly returned to Playboy, whence new Maxim editor in chief James Kaminsky poached him last fall, confirms a spokeswoman.

Sources say Baime's exit was amicable, but elsewhere on the staff, tensions are running high over the bogus review. "We've gotten more attention over this than for anything else we've done in months," says one insider.

And the magazine itself? It's down on the newsstand by an average of 9.2 percent for the three issues since Kaminsky's "sophisticated" new design rolled out ...
